Packing Plant looking to build in Haywood County

Mike and Charline Lenagar, Neola Farms in Brighton, TN, presented the Rotary program today. They would like to bring a packing plant to Haywood County. The site is part of the County Farm/Jail. Their black angus beef is all natural and the plans are for the site to include a retail store that we can buy from, too. This will be coming before the County Commission at the August 23 called meeting and will include some public hearings as well. Right now they are selling to restaurants, hotels and St. Jude hospital. Because of the quaility of this meat, the hospital is able to offer this meat to the young patients whose immune systems are so low. This seems to be a well thought out plan and the Lenagars assured us that there would be no smell and no noise. This is a great opportunity for Haywood County.

The Memphis Chamber did this video about Neola Farms. It's a great introduction to the family and the type operation that they run.

  1. I FOR ONE THINK THIS IS A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY FOR THE LENAGAR FAMILY AND THE PEOPLE OF HAYWOOD COUNTY. THIS COUNTY NEEDS MORE BUSINESSES AND JOB OPPORTUNITIES. WE ARE A FARMING COMMUNITY AND THIS BUSINESS WOULD ENHANCE THIS COUNTY. WE NEED THIS NOW, NOT IN TWO OR THREE YEARS. THE NEGATIVE OPINIONS ARE THE ONES WHO DON'T WANT CHANGE OR GROWTH FOR THIS COUNTY.
THE PERSONAL ENDORSEMENTS I'VE HEARD ON THE LENAGAR FAMILY IS EXCEPTIONAL AND I WOULD WELCOME THEM AND THEIR BUSINESS WHOLE HEARTEDLY TO OUR COMMUNITY.

  2. Let us call this "Meat Packing Company" what it truly is: a Slaughterhouse. If it was moving into your neighborhood, across the street from you, you might not welcome it so freely. I do wish folks would invest a little time in researching all that a slaughterhouse involves. The Lenagar family have done their utmost to make their proposed slaugherhouse as pretty and sweet-smelling as a rose garden. I believe it was reported that they live on a 133 acre farm...let them build their slaughterhouse on their own land.
Certainly we need new business and industry here but that shouldn't lead us to welcome any and all comers. There are some businesses that come with too many inherent problems and negatives. I hope our city leaders will say NO to the Lenagars.

  3. WHILE YOU THINK ABOUT ALL THOSE FINE ROASTS AND STEAKS AND BURGERS GOING TO CHEFS AND THE LITTLE SICK CHILDREN IN HOSPITALS, ALSO THINK ABOUT THE BLOOD AND GORE THAT WILL BE RINSED OFF INTO OUR CITY SEWAGE, AND THE WASTE PRODUCTS THAT MUST BE DISPOSED OF WITH THE HIGHEST CARE TO PREVENT POLLUTION AND DISEASE. THINK ABOUT THE NOISE AND SMELL OF CATTLE BEING TRUCKED INTO THE SITE...UNLESS THEY ARE HERDED THROUGH TUNNELS INTO ENCLOSED, WALLED-UP HOLDING PENS WHICH I DOUBT. AND DON'T FORGET THE EXCREMENT!! THERE'S MORE TO A SLAUGHTERHOUSE THAN DOUBLE BURGERS WITH BACON!
WE DON'T NEED A SLAUGHTERHOUSE ON ONE OF THE FEW ATTRACTIVE APPROACHES TO OUR CITY.

  5. I am so very disappointed with the County Commissioners who voted to bring the slaughterhouse to the beautiful country fields off the Jackson Highway, over the protests and pleas of the many, many families who live near the site. Don't long-time residents have any say about what comes into their neighborhood? To everyone who is for this slaughterhouse, I say "Wait your turn...something will one day threaten your neighborhood too and let's see how you feel when your pleas fall on deaf-ears."
